[2026 update]
A flying pebble on a Phoenix freeway can chip your windshield in a split second. If you catch the damage early, a retail DIY auto glass fix is a viable temporary solution.
These universal windshield repair kit instructions will help you through the process cleanly and safely using any standard retail repair kit.
Warning: If the crack is deeper than 1/8 inch or directly in the driver’s line of sight, a DIY kit is unsafe. A full windshield replacement is required to maintain structural safety.
1. Clean the Damaged Area
- Apply rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner directly to a clean microfiber cloth.
- Wipe the glass around the chip thoroughly to remove dirt, dust, and grease.
- Dry the area completely. Do not spray liquids directly onto the crack.
2. Clear Loose Glass Shards
- Scrape inside the impact point gently using a safety pin or needle.
- Remove any loose glass fragments or crushed shards from the pit.
- Place a piece of colored paper inside the car behind the chip to make the cracks easier to see.
3. Attach the Adhesive Seal and Pedestal
- Peel the backing off one side of the double-sided adhesive ring seal.
- Center the seal directly over the chip, ensuring the alignment tab faces upward.
- Press the seal firmly onto the glass, peel off the top backing, and press the plastic pedestal firmly onto the adhesive.
4. Inject the Auto Glass Repair Resin
- Drip 3 to 4 drops of liquid glass resin into the opening of the pedestal.
- Insert the kit syringe tightly into the pedestal chamber.
- Pull the syringe plunger upward to create a vacuum, lock it in place, and wait 10 minutes to draw out trapped air bubbles.
- Release the syringe briefly to vent air, reinsert it, and push the plunger down to force the resin deep into the cracks. Lock it and wait 20 minutes.
5. Cure the Resin and Scrape Excess
- Remove the syringe and gently peel the pedestal and adhesive seal off the glass using a safety razor blade.
- Add a single drop of fresh resin directly onto the filled impact pit.
- Place the clear yellow curing strip over the wet resin, smoothing out any bubbles with the razor blade.
- Cure in direct sunlight for 15 minutes (or 1 hour on cloudy days).
- Scrape the hardened excess resin flush with the windshield holding the razor at a 45-degree angle.
