Tucson sits in a Sonoran Desert valley surrounded by the Santa Catalinas, Tucsons, Rincons, Santa Ritas, and Tortolitas, roughly 108 miles southeast of Phoenix as the county seat of Pima County and Arizona’s second-largest city. Known as The Old Pueblo, it’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America, with farming communities working the Santa Cruz River valley for over 4,000 years before Spanish missionary Eusebio Kino founded Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1700.

The University of Arizona, established in 1885, anchors the central city and is known worldwide for optical sciences and space exploration research, including managing NASA missions. In 2015, Tucson became the first U.S. city designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, recognized for its heritage crops and distinct Sonoran-style cuisine, including the famous Sonoran hot dog.

Public education is anchored by Tucson Unified School District, the state’s second-largest, with schools like Tucson High Magnet, the oldest high school in southern Arizona. Surrounding areas fall under districts like Amphitheater, Catalina Foothills, and Vail Unified. Nicknamed “Optics Valley” for its concentration of optics and defense firms, Tucson is also home to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Saguaro National Park, and the Pima Air & Space Museum.
