Surprise sits along the US-60 (Grand Avenue) corridor about 45 minutes northwest of downtown Phoenix, bordered by Peoria and Sun City to the east, El Mirage and Luke Air Force Base to the south, and the White Tank Mountains to the west. Founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler — who named it Surprise because she’d “be surprised if the town ever amounted to much” — it’s grown from a single square mile of farmland into one of Arizona’s fastest-expanding cities, with a population topping 150,000.

Surprise is also a major Cactus League destination, with Surprise Stadium serving as the spring training home for the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers since 2002, and hosting the Arizona Fall League’s Surprise Saguaros.

Public education runs through Dysart Schools, headquartered right in Surprise, with high schools including Valley Vista, Willow Canyon, and Shadow Ridge. The city is also home to Sun City Grand, a 9,500-home 55+ community built by Del Webb in the late 1990s, and the civic-minded Surprise Recreation Campus, featuring a fishing lake, aquatic center, and regional library.
