Old West charm at the edge of the Sonoran Desert

About 33 miles north of downtown Phoenix along Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek sits in the Desert Foothills region right next to Carefree and North Scottsdale — a natural transition point between the urban Valley floor and the wild high-desert terrain of the Tonto National Forest. Unlike much of its planned suburban neighbors, the town holds firmly onto its frontier identity, with rustic saloons, rodeo events at the Cave Creek Memorial Arena, and Frontier Town, an 1800s-style western shopping village with wooden boardwalks and vintage storefronts.

At the town’s northern edge, Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area protects over 2,150 acres of Sonoran Desert, including the last year-round flowing stretch of Cave Creek, cottonwood riparian zones, Hohokam petroglyph sites, and old gold mining ruins.

Students attend the Cave Creek Unified School District, with Cactus Shadows High School serving families from Cave Creek, Carefree, and parts of northern Scottsdale. Overhead, Black Mountain rises 3,398 feet between Cave Creek and Carefree, drawing hikers up its steep summit trail for 360-degree views of the entire Valley.
