San Tan Valley sits entirely within Pinal County, just south and east of Queen Creek and north of Florence. What began as pecan groves and open desert range grew rapidly through the 2000s into a community of over 100,000 residents, with municipal services and road infrastructure managed at the county level rather than by a local city hall.

The community takes its name from the nearby San Tan Mountains, and San Tan Mountain Regional Park sits right along its western border, protecting more than 10,000 acres of Sonoran Desert with popular trails like Dynamite Trail and San Tan Trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Public education runs through two main Pinal County districts — J.O. Combs Unified serves the northern half, anchored by Combs High School, while Florence Unified covers the central and southern neighborhoods with campuses like Poston Butte and San Tan Foothills High School. The area is built almost entirely around large master-planned communities, including Pecan Creek, Johnson Ranch with its 18-hole public golf course, Copper Basin, and the Encanterra country club enclave.
