Del Webb’s refined successor to the original Sun City

Sun City West sits about 2.5 miles northwest of the original Sun City, bordered by Surprise and Peoria in the Northwest Valley. Built between 1978 and 1997 by the Del E. Webb Corporation, it was designed as a direct successor to Sun City, incorporating two decades of feedback into roughly 16,900 homes with newer floor plans, wider roads, and expanded resort-style amenities.

As a HUD-designated 55+ community, Sun City West is governed by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West, which oversees four major recreation centers, seven golf courses, a 30-lane bowling center, and more than 100 chartered activity clubs. Healthcare needs are met by Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, a 390-plus bed acute-care hospital that opened in 1988 and serves the West Valley’s senior population with specialized medical, cardiac, and surgical care.

Because the community is strictly age-restricted, there are no public K-12 schools within its residential borders, though the land falls under Dysart Unified School District for boundary purposes.
