A small garden city with deep tire-industry roots

Tucked almost entirely inside Goodyear about 15 miles west of downtown Phoenix, Litchfield Park is one of the smallest cities in the Valley at just 3.3 square miles. It was founded in 1917 as a company town by Paul W. Litchfield, a Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company executive who bought 16,000 acres to grow long-staple cotton for auto tires. That legacy lives on at The Wigwam, the historic AAA Four-Diamond resort that opened in 1918 as an executive retreat, now known for its 54 holes of championship golf.

Unlike the grid-pattern suburbs surrounding it, Litchfield Park was designed as a walkable garden city, with palm-lined boulevards, citrus trees, and a central green space at Tier City Park. Local ordinances have long kept traffic lights and chain stores to a minimum, preserving the town’s small-scale character.

The town also lends its name to the Litchfield Elementary School District, which now covers a wide stretch of the West Valley, though its original Litchfield Elementary School still operates in the heart of town. High schoolers typically attend nearby Millennium High School, part of the Agua Fria Union High School District.
