The West Valley’s fastest-growing frontier

Buckeye anchors the far western edge of the Phoenix metro area along the I-10 corridor, and by land area it’s one of the largest cities in the entire country — a municipal footprint of roughly 640 square miles. What was once a small agricultural town has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., with new development stretching out toward the White Tank Mountains.

Much of that growth is happening in large master-planned communities like Verrado, known for its walkable Main Street and tree-lined streets, along with Sundance, Tartesso, and the massive 37,000-acre Teravalis development built to house tens of thousands of future residents. Because the city spans such a wide footprint, school boundaries are split across several districts — high schoolers attend Buckeye Union High School District campuses like Youngker and Estrella Foothills, or Verrado High School under Agua Fria Union, while younger students are zoned to districts including Liberty Elementary, Litchfield Elementary, and Saddle Mountain Unified.

To the north, White Tank Mountain Regional Park spans nearly 30,000 acres of hiking, biking, and camping terrain, including the popular Waterfall Trail, which winds past ancient Hohokam petroglyphs on its way to a seasonal desert waterfall.
