Certified Windshield Calibration — Valley-Wide Service

If your vehicle has recently had a windshield replacement, been involved in a minor collision, had a suspension change or a wheel alignment, it requires windshield calibration. Automakers recommend all vehicles equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) to be recalibrated in order for the camera and safety system to continue to work properly. This is necessary because most sensors are aimed very precisely, and unintended adjustments of even a fraction of an inch can ruin their accuracy by 50 feet or more! Therefore, recalibration services are necessary to bring your ADAS back to OEM specifications and ensure your safety on the road.

ProLite Auto Glass is your go-to provider of automobile maintenance in Metro Phoenix. We offer accredited calibration services for all types of vehicles to keep you safe on the road. If you notice any of the following, contact us immediately at (480) 525-6554:

Auto Glass Calibration Services

You may think of your windshield as just another piece of auto glass, but modern car models have advanced technology embedded in their windshields. Does your car have a forward-facing camera mounted anywhere near your windscreen? Alternatively, look for a 360-degree “around-view” one, which uses several small cameras at the front, rear and sides of the vehicle. If so equipped, the camera’s proper operation is a critical component of automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and more. As such, it must be recalibrated any time you have your windshield replaced.

In fact, such a camera isn’t the only device gathering information for your ADAS, as ADAS relies on information from multiple sensors. Through those inputs, it can “see” what’s happening around the automobile. Aside from input from a camera, there are also radar (collision warning) and ultrasonic (parking assist) sensors. Moreover, there are sensors even for steering, that aid with determining the direction in which the vehicle travels.

Depending on the car’s make and model, ADAS can use information provided by a single type of sensor, or combine information from multiple sensors (“sensor fusion”). What’s more, it’s important that only OEM approved covers and bumpers are used where sensors are involved, so that the materials don’t interfere with their signal. For example, ultrasonic sensors don’t require calibration, but they must be placed in very specific places, made of certain materials. If you replace a certain car part with an aftermarket piece, ADAS efficiency can be affected. Whatever your specific case may be, ProLite can do auto glass installation and sensor recalibration in the same appointment, to spare you time and money.

The Types of ADAS Calibration

Dynamic ADAS Calibration

If your vehicle has a “dynamic” ADAS system, our mobile windshield calibration team will come to you for free and complete both windshield replacement and windshield recalibration in one single appointment. The process can be done remotely as the calibration is performed by inserting a hand-held unit straight into your automobile. Once attached, the vehicle has to be driven at a proper speed, over a certain distance, in appropriate weather conditions. All the exact parameters are manufacturer-prescribed. After this test, the vehicle is good to go!

Static ADAS Calibration

If you have a “static” safety system however, you’ll have to bring the vehicle to us, as the use of specialized equipment in an enclosed environment is necessary. As such, we will do both windshield replacement and recalibration in shop. Following the static calibration, it is however the case that many sensors (such as radar ones) can still require a follow-up dynamic procedure. Still, even if dynamic calibration isn’t mandatory, a test drive is recommended in order to ensure that the sensors are functioning optimally.

Around-View Camera and Steering Angle Calibration

Calibrating 360-degree cameras is necessary when one or more of the cameras is replaced, or the mounting part is removed (door mirror, door, grille etc). This is usually a static, in-shop process, and done with specialized large, patterned mats. That being said, in some cases, around-view cameras do necessitate dynamic calibration. If your airbag has been deployed, or you’ve had structural repairs or a wheel alignment, it’s time for us to conduct a steering angle calibration as well. The procedure is quite straightforward, so don’t worry about wasted time!

Why Windshield Calibration Services Are Important

Calibration services are necessary to make sure that Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and all the safety features of your vehicle are functional. Even the slightest change in a sensor’s position can put you at risk of accidents.

After you’ve had repairs made to your car, the vehicle’s cameras, lasers and radars are no longer properly aligned. Under these circumstances, the car’s computer can’t operate in safe conditions, putting you at a greater risk of road accidents. In case of imminent danger, your ADAS should alert the car’s safety system early on so that it can take preventive action. If your vehicle’s ADAS isn’t properly calibrated, these warning signals may come too late or be read incorrectly, reducing the safety system’s response time and efficiency.

Signs You Should Calibrate Your ADAS

  • A warning light or a message on the instrument panel;
  • A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in your car’s computer memory;
  • Vibration in your steering wheel;
  • Vehicle steering pull;
  • A noticeable increase in steering effort.

The vital applications of your ADAS

  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Park Assist/Self-Parking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Adaptive headlights that steer with the vehicle
  • Automatic emergency breaking
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
