Windshield Shade Band

What’s A Windshield Shade Band

A windshield shade band, or vinyl windshield visor, is a straightforward improvement to your regular sun visor. It’s basically a strip at the top of your windshield that’s blue-ish in color. Its purpose is to filter out sunlight that can make your driving experiences unpleasant.

There’s one good indicator above others that your windshield has this technology. More precisely, if you aren’t continuously adjusting your seating position or playing around with your sun visor. Because in the end, that means the sunlight isn’t bothering you, as it could be filtered by your vinyl windshield visor.

Making Sure You Have A Windshield Shade Band

Taking note of your driving experience in order to determine if you have a shade band is a viable option, but not completely accurate. Instead, you can visually check for it very easily. The vinyl visor is basically a strip of glass that’s been tinted to be darker.

Usually, it is around 3 to 6 inches wide, so as to block the sun no matter its position during the day, while also not impeding your visibility of the road. That’s also why this technology isn’t applied to the entirety of your windshield, as it isn’t transparent. In fact, it has a blue-ish hue (usually), so it’s not standard for all vehicles either, and neither is it a production requirement.

Still, if you do not have a windshield shade band, it is definitely worth considering to get one. Glare can be a real issue when driving, especially if the sun is just ahead of you. Dropping your sun visor definitely helps, but it also obstructs your view.

While vinyl visors aren’t completely transparent, you can still see through them.

Any Other Benefits To Vinyl Windshield Visors?

Aside from improving your driving experience by helping you beat the glare, they also aids your eyes. Looking directly into the sun can be highly damaging to your eyesight, same as regularly squinting to keep annoying rays directly from your field of view.

While a windshield shade band doesn’t block out all of the sun’s rays, it is still of great help in this regard, especially during sundown. That’s because when evening is drawing near, the sun’s getting closer and closer to where you’re actively looking while driving.

In Case Of Windshield Replacement

Like we mentioned above, not all windshields come with a vinyl visor. Those that do can also come in multiple colors, like blue, gray, green, but this is simply the type of sun-reducing shade chosen by the manufacturer.
